Maesteg Celtic 31 - 24 Porthcawl RFC Youth

Porthcawl Youth travelled to Maesteg Celtic Friday night, playing their 1st game of 15 a-side since January 2020.

The 2 sides did not fail to deliver a great game, showing great attacking intent from the outset. Celtic struck 1st to take an early 7-0 lead, but Porthcawl fought back with a well worked 1st phase scrum move finished by winger Tom Finaghan who hit the line at a great angle to burt through the Celtic defence. Converted by Youth captain Elliott Bennett.  A great team try that involved every Porthcawl player touhing the ball in the build up, finished by flanker and pack leader Ongani Kalongo put the scoreline 12 all. Another great attacking try finished by winger CJ (definitly a rugby player not a footbller) sent Porthcawl into half-time 19-12 up.

The 2nd half gave Porthcawl coaches some examples of areas to work on over the coming weeks which resulted in Celtic sneaking into a 31-19 lead due largely to compounded errors. Porthcawl fought hard to get back into the game and another great attacking try was soced by Gabe Lacey to make the score 31-24. All coaches were happy with the attacking intent showed by the team and noted the areas that cost us the game to make sure these will be improved on over the coming weeks.

Simon Norris, Head Coach said "We as coaches are extremly proud of the effort every player showed tonight and excited to see what this team can achieve over the coming months. We showed great attacking intent and scored some lovely tries, which is what the game is about. Our defence on our own line at times was exceptional and boys showed what it means to them to pull on the Porthcawl jersey. There are areas of the game we need to improve on, which will be worked on over the coming weeks. We have a home game next week at South Road and would be great to see as many Porthcawl people down the club suppporting the boys. We have committed to playing attacking rugby, therefore people will not be dissappointed if they come down"
