Porthcawl Under 15s 17 Cowbridge 0

Tough scrappy game today with both teams struggling to get some level of continuity and flow, hampered  with knock ons and dropped balls.
Start of the game was frantic with both teams running the ball with some great tackles going in. We asked  our forwards to step up in the contact and ruck area which was much better today securing out ball but we still seemed to clogg up the 10 channel but when we got the ball out wide we looked dangerous.
Great seeing Ash and Piers getting stuck in at the rucks and both caried well today. Evs his best game for a long time lots of ball in hand and some really good carries supported by his front row team with Finnian and max flan clearing the rucks well. Line-outs started well and we got a driving lineout going and then dex drove over for the first try. We started getting some quick ball with Lex getting the backs moving with Dewi kicking well putting Cowbridge on the back foot.
Then we worked the ball wide Dewi to Mack out to Oscar and Cae with a really strong run, it’s nice seeing the wingers getting the ball but Cae was just held up short but only for Dewi to pick up and he crossed the line.
Second half was much more of a struggle as our Lineouts which are normally our strength became a problem loosing our way not giving us a platform to run the ball. Either form a kick or when we moved the ball beau, FDA, Oscar and Mack and Sam looked dangerous and when the ball was moved wide Cae made the hard yards. Very few times in the second half we got quick ball sam came on a good angle and powered over the line.  Pleasing today was the rucks which was much better and out defence was outstanding, some really good tackles and dex always at the front of the action and must have made 6 turnovers and would have normally claimed man of the match. But today man of the match is shared by two players who have not played much rugby and really put in a shift today. the first being Monty who just joined us and Oscar who has been out with a long standing injury. Monty must have made 4 or 5 dominant tackles and showed up well in the ruck area and even had a couple of runs, well done monty doing the hard work. Oscar his first game for a long time and we had asked him to be more aggressive and use his power and skill and he looked like he enjoyed the tackle area today always pushing the defensive line up and strong in attack. We have a Few things to work on Wednesday to get back to the higher standards we know we can achieve. Next Sunday pontyclun have a cup game so if we can’t find another game we will probably train as we have valley ravens the following week.
