WOMEN’S RUGBY
PORTHCAWL SHE-GULLS    17 pts    TALBOT REDS  5
Porthcawl’s new women’s team, just 8 weeks in the making, played host to established league side Talbot Reds at South Road on Friday evening in front of a large expectant crowd.
In playing conditions that could have been better, with the rain steadily falling during the match, the home side created their own little piece of history as they scored three super tries to run out winners by 17 points to 5, with match Referee Ray Price of Cimla having a fine match himself, helping both sides to play and to the spirit of the laws.
With both sides showing a strong and true intent to play Rugby and get stuck into the task, Porthcawl had the better of matters as they posted two tries for a 10-nil half-time score, with tries by centre Jo Pewsey and lock Tanya Hanna, both players putting in fine performances.
They added to the score with Hanna’s second try, converted by outside-half Ffion Jones for 17-nil before visiting centre Claire Lewis, a tall and strong player got her just rewards for being the pick of the visitors with a consolation try, ten minutes from time.
For the She-Gulls, Mel Burge-Davies was excellent whilst flanker Emma Richards was a real handful in attack and defence and was singled out by the referee and most of the crowd as deserving the ‘man-of-the-match’ performance with a superb all-round display.
Most of the Porthcawl players had never played a match before and every player on the park gave of their best and the team spirit on show will ensure that this new chapter will continue to become more interesting as time goes on.
Coach Andrew Bradford couldn’t contain his elation at the result and his broad grin said it all as he and the girls celebrated with a few well-earned drinks.
Any women wishing to play Rugby should get in touch with the Club, you’ll be most welcome on this new journey!
