PORTHCAWL 17 MORRISTON 0

Porthcawl’s unbeaten start to the season continued at South Road on Saturday as Morriston’s efforts were thwarted by stubborn home defence, which at times was tested to the limit.

The unfavourable and wet conditions were far from conducive to a running game, however with playmaker Jon Phillips back to control matters, the Seaweeds made good use of the ball for much of the match.

When fly-half Ben Thomas put Phillips into a gap on 9 minutes, he in turn fed co-centre Aled Davies who cantered over at the posts, with Thomas’ conversion making it 7-nil and a great start for the home side.

Morriston’s pack is a very useful and driven outfit and their game is firmly based around this, with the home eight having to give all they had to keep on terms at times, with the visitors’ driving game impressive and threatening.

When wing Jordan Skidmore put in a relieving 70 metre kick out of defence, it set up the opportunity for Porthcawl to get into visiting territory and Ben Thomas slotted a penalty from 20 metres in front for off-side and 10-nil.

As the visitors again threatened with a sustained period of pressure, it took a superb piece of work at the breakdown by flanker Chris Blake to snuff out what could have been a dangerous position for Porthcawl, as he turned over the ball at a ruck for a penalty that eased the pressure going into the interval.

As the start of the second period continued where the first half had ended, wing Jordan Fox set off on a brilliant 50 metre run down the right flank, passing to Aled Davies before the move came to grief and the visitors took the ball out of defence with some smart play. With Morriston wing Aled Williams about to fly over for a probable try at the corner, a wonderful cover tackle from behind by Ben Thomas stopped him in his tracks, the latest of many great touches by Thomas during the match.

As the weather continued to make life difficult for handling, Morriston probably played the conditions a little better by keeping the ball close in a display of almost continual driving forward play, however the Porthcawl defence was more than up to the task.

Eventually, the Seaweeds gained a great position as Thomas penalty for position resulted in a lineout ten metres out from the line. A superb controlled forward drive from the lineout saw hard-working prop Jamie Uren driven over for the try that effectively wrapped up the match, with Thomas’ fine conversion off touch and 17-nil, bring down the curtain on another sound Porthcawl performance.

This Saturday sees the Seaweeds away at Bonymaen in the first round of this year’s WRU Plate competition before returning to League action the following week at Ystradgynlais on 06 October.
