PORTHCAWL 31 SEVEN SISTERS 7

HAT-TRICK HERO PROTHEROE BOOSTS SEAWEEDS
Porthcawl welcomed Seven Sisters to South Road on an afternoon where the rain set in to ruin the second half of the match, which will be remembered for an outstanding try hat-trick from flanker Louis Protheroe, with seven tries in three matches.
Seven Sisters jumbo pack would prove to be difficult opponents in close driving play and at the set-piece throughout the afternoon, and they provided stiff opposition despite the scoreline. The Seaweeds simply played a brand of running Rugby that took the steam out of the visitors, come the final whistle. On eight minutes, Protheroe nabbed his first try, showing smart pace to break through, with Josh White converting and 7-nil.
It was White turning provider moments later to provide Protheroe with the scoring pass as again the young flanker sliced through at the posts, White’s extras making it 14-nil in less than even time.
The first half weather was conducive to running Rugby and when Porthcawl’s ever-dependable scrum-half Tom Davies took advantage of a quick tap penalty to move up the left hand side of the field, he offloaded perfectly to provide centre Jon Phillips with a scoring pass and the speedster flew over at the corner for another superb try. White’s superb conversion off touch made it 21 points without reply as the visitors struggled to cope with the pace, despite the intensity of their forward play around the park when they had the ball.
Protheroe was having a marvellous afternoon as the stand-out performer in the home side and when he achieved his hat-trick minutes before the interval with another super try off skipper Leon McNally’s pass, again converted by White, his achievement virtually sounded the death knell for Seven Sisters as far as the result was concerned, 28-nil at the break.
The second half was a different story as the rain came in and levelled matters, with the conditions more suited to the visitors’ driving forward play and the match drifted along until the 52 minute when the Sisters managed a converted try in consolation from yet another forward drive.
Try as they still might, Porthcawl simply couldn’t capitalise on their possession in the wet conditions and it was coming close to full-time when White nabbed the final points of the day and a bonus point win at 31-7, taking the Seaweeds to the top of the division, four matches in.
Porthcawl take a break from League action this weekend however on Friday evening the new Ladies Senior XV play their first match under the South Road lights against Talbot Reds and all supports are urged to be there shout them on, kick-off at 7-15pm.
