Porthcawl brought down the curtain on their season with a comprehensive home victory against a spirited Rhigos outfit.

Following a day of rain which put the match in doubt, the home side threw caution to the wind and provided a fine display of running rugby and it wasn’t long before their approach paid off.

Following some great approach play by the home backs, the ball was worked out to hooker to veteran hooker Ian Walker who superbly caught the high floated pass to crash over at the corner for the try, Scott Govan’s conversion sailing just wide.

One thing that Porthcawl have perfected this season is the  rolling maul from lineout possession and skipper Richard Hnyda was next to get on the score sheet as he completed the drive from his pack to grab a further unconverted try.

Rhigos really were struggling to cope with the home pack whose power set a solid platform up front, with James Burge-Davies and Christian Long always in the thick of it and when Porthcawl again pressed for the corner, Rhigos gave away the penalty try, converted by Govan and at 17-nil Porthcawl were cruising.

When Porthcawl again showed adventure from their half, running the ball to the visitors 22, centre Jon Phillips bamboozled the Rhigos defence to ghost through for easily for an unconverted try and 22-0 before scrum-half Jack Robins rounded off the half with another try and at 27-nil at the break, there seemed no way back from Rhigos, such was the home dominance.

Yet, Rhigos are never a side to lie down and they took advantage of lax home defence early in the second spell to drive over for a converted try, which was no more than their effort deserved.

Porthcawl soon got back into their stride and a superb break from centre Gareth Rees tors through the heart of the midfield, before he handed on to Phillips whose inside pass was brilliantly snapped of his toes by wing Joey Jones who scampered over for another unconverted try and 32-7.

Rhigos could so easily have thrown in the towel but yet again back they came with determined attack and scored another deserved converted try for 32-14, making the score somewhat more respectable.

With the match shortly closing, it was Jones once more who darted through to round it all off for a comprehensive victory as his unconverted try closed matters at 37-14, bringing the campaign to a close in fine style.

Coach Rhys James was satisfied with the win and the season in general as Porthcawl’s young side showed much promise going forward and following a short break, training for the new season will commence and is eagerly anticipated.
