PORTHCAWL 17 BRIDGEND SPORTS 20

Matches between these two never fail to excite and Porthcawl’s belated start to the season ended in narrow defeat when victory seemed in the bag.

Returning fly-half Josh White got the scoreboard moving with an early penalty from fully 47 metres, only for the Sports to cancel this out for 3-3 at half-time, with both teams having tried their best to create and play decent Rugby.

The second spell couldn’t have started better for Porthcawl as following sustained pressure on the Sports backs, a hurried pass went astray and full-back Gareth Rees showed why he is the wrong person to throw a loose pass to, as he gleefully intercepted and sprinted unopposed to the line for a superb try, goaled by White and 10-3.

The Sports never lie down and indeed often make things difficult for opponents and anything Porthcawl could do, well so could they, as they levelled with a fine converted try under the posts, converted for 10 points apiece.

With the match played at a frenetic pace at times, with commitment total from both sides, it was always going to be nip and tuck and the match swung back the Seaweeds way once more, as flying wing Joey Jones, made the crucial break before feeding the supporting centre Tom Bluck and his try converted by White once more, again edged Porthcawl ahead, now into the final 10 minutes.

Predictably, back came the Sports as Porthcawl seemed to suddenly tire and their converted try for a tied score at 17-all, made for an exciting finish. With time ebbing closer to no-side, one last determined effort by the visitors saw Porthcawl concede a crucial penalty and two minutes into injury time, the Sports goaled the kick to snatch the spoils, ending the match at 17-20.

Most observers in both camps agreed that a draw would have been a truer reflection of the match, however it wasn’t to be Porthcawl’s day and the Sports joyously edged the result. The Seaweeds now travel to Glyncorrwg on Saturday, in search of a first win on the road this season.
