Mel Jones O.B.E.

Deeply sad news has reached us today.
Our Trustee, Mel Jones O.B.E., has passed away.

The 1960s through to the 1970s was a period of great change for us and culminated in one of the strongest teams ever fielded by the Club and one of the most successful periods in the club's history.

A large part of the credit for the success can be attributed to the establishment of a Youth team at the end of the 1963-64 season. The inspiration for this came from one man - Mel Jones - who was the examination officer at the WJEC.

Mel went on to be Club Coach in 1966-67. His overall analysis, insight and motivational skills helped develop one of the greatest squads in our history.

Mel continued to serve the Club off the field and become Hon. Secretary. He was instrumental with the planning, co-ordination and eventual move to our permanent home at South Road.

Mel was a true gent and continued to be an incredible support to the Club and became one of our Trustees.
He will be sorely missed.

Our thoughts are with Elizabeth, David, Catherine, Stephen and all his family and friends at this time.

The funeral will take place on Thursday 29th April at All Saints Church at 2pm followed by cremation at Margam.

Under the current restrictions only those who have been invited can attend the funeral.

A live stream will be available on the Parish of Newton, Nottage and Porthcawl Facebook page.
