Under 11s Report

Match Report
Sunday 27th November 2016

Porthcawl RFC U11s. 20 - 5 Treherbert

Late starting today as the loads of mini games going on at South Road were running late, but how uplifting is it to see literally hundreds of kids having real go at this wonderful sport? Treherbert our opponents today on a good pitch on a dry but cold winters morning.

Off to a really good start today which was very welcomed, Sam Taylor-King picking up a good try two minutes in. Treherbert were great in defence holding us back under lots of pressure for long periods of the half. In possession they were unable to break out of their own half as our defence snuffed out attacks with good solid tackling and a desire to win the ball back and go again. Our second try came from some quick thinking from Callum Wallis, as we attacked our player with the ball got tackled and went to ground and presented the ball nicely although no ruck formed, Callum realising this grasped the opportunity and the ball to cross the line from two yards grounding the ball for his first try for this team, and without doubt not his last. Our third try coming from Max Williams, after Zander Kale intercepted a high ball from a Treherbert kick out of danger tipping it back to Max Williams to run in from twenty yards. 3-0 at the break
Second half, we were on the back foot for longish periods but Treherbert never truly looked liked scoring as their efforts appeared speculative rather than created, and that's not a criticism, they were just not given much room to work their magic due to some very well organised defence. In saying that Treherbert did score their try, as we tried to clear the ball kicking across field from a defensive scrum straight into the hands of their winger who dully accepted the challenge to run the ball in from thirty metres. A gift well taken. Our fourth and final try coming from Oliver Russell, a quick penalty from scrum half to fly half who passed back inside to Oliver to open his clubs Try scoring account from 5 yards crashing over the line. 4-1 final score.

A good win for us today after last week's performance. We perhaps might have scored a few more tries and put the game out of reach, but with that final pass alluding us it's not to be at the moment.. at least until training on Wednesday. Our players didn't get involved with the oppositions banter which was good to see, ignorance really is the best policy. I am going to mention one player here who's tackling stood out head and shoulders above anybodies on the park. As the player is such an unassuming player I am pretty sure that the he wouldn't guess that the best tackling today came from him. A real masterclass in the technique of tackling, well done Caden Evans all your efforts were noticed by all who know.

Captains Comment
A world away from last week's game, we showed good character and never really looked threatened. My stand out player today is a tough call, with so many individual top performances. Caden gets the nod for me as he was massive in breaking up their play today with some really cool tackling.

Try scorers
Sam Taylor-King. 1
Callum Wallis. 1
Max Williams. 1
Oliver Russell. 1
